For some KU students, formative career experience starts at the University Press of Kansas.

The University Press of Kansas has been publishing books for 80 years. We’ve published over 2,500 titles and add about forty-five new titles to our esteemed collection every year. We’re proud of our history. But some of our proudest achievements don’t live on a bookshelf. They’re the students who started at the Press as interns and left with the experience, knowledge, and confidence to succeed in their next chapter.

In 2017, we formally established an internship program, building upon a long tradition of student employment with practical function. This comprehensive program is designed to give students in-depth, hands-on experience in the publishing world. UPK interns do meaningful work: from contacting peer reviewers to proofreading manuscripts to creating social media graphics. They learn about acquisitions, production, design, marketing, sales, and business, and have the full support of our knowledgeable staff.

We know how transformative our internship program can be—two of UPK’s current staff are former interns! Our student interns complete their internships prepared for various career opportunities: from working as publishing professionals to copyright and scholarly communication librarians to law school students. Regardless of where they go after UPK, our students share the foundational experience of a non-profit internship driven by mission.

We want to reach more students—and we need your help to do it.

Hosting one intern costs $2,000 a semester. That’s a small investment with a profound return. We’re shaping the career trajectory of students and preparing tomorrow’s workforce to protect and elevate the future of scholarship and knowledge in Kansas and beyond.

Every gift makes a difference. Will you help us fund the next great publishing career?
