The Kansas Geological Survey is a nonregulatory research and service division of the University of Kansas. We study and provide information about the state’s geologic resources – including groundwater, energy, and critical minerals – and geologic hazards.

Unfortunately, Earth Sciences are an under resourced science topic in our classrooms across the state. Our interviews and surveys with teachers have highlighted two themes that drive this barrier. The first theme is a lack of confidence with the topic. The second is a lack of high quality teaching resources that align with the state science standards and are directly connected to Kansas issues.

For One Day One KU, we are asking for your help to address this barrier! Your gift will support our K-12 teacher workshop programming. Beginning in 2025, we developed 2.5 day earth science workshops series specifically for K-12 teachers. The workshops are free for teachers and we host them in cities across the state to help reach more teachers from rural areas.

Additionally, your support will be used to assist teachers travelling to these workshops by providing financial compensation towards gas, food, and hotel expenses. Funds will also be used to support classroom resource kits. All teachers attending the workshops receive a variety of supplies to take back to their classrooms including rock and mineral kits, fossils, maps and other lesson plans and resources.
